Itinerary | Day 1, Wednesday, March 14, 2012: We depart New York on
our overnight flight to Barcelona.
Day 2, Thursday, March 15,
2012: Upon arrival in Barcelona we meet our local representative and
depart for the city center and Las Ramblas, the pedestrian mall… We see the
harbor area, Columbus Statue, the Holy Family Church designed by Gaudi, and
Guell Park… We check in at our hotel, and enjoy a Welcome dinner and
introductory lecture by Professor Stephen Berk this evening…Overnight in
Barcelona.
Day 3, Friday, March 16, 2012: Breakfast and
lecture by Professor Stephen Berk…We depart for a full day tour of Gerona,
formerly a major Jewish center and home to the famous Ramban - Nachmonides. We
see the Old Jewish Quarter, newly restored museum and courtyard… Lunch on own at
a sidewalk café… Return to Barcelona…Tonight we enjoy Shabbat dinner together…
Overnight in Barcelona.
Day 4, Saturday, March 17,
2012: Breakfast… This morning we attend Shabbat Services at the modern
day synagogue - “The Comunidad Israelita de Barcelona”, a traditional Sephardic
Jewish congregation in the city… This afternoon we will explore Barcelona's
Jewish Heritage, from past to present… Our tour will include the El Call, or
Jewish Quarter, and the oldest synagogue found and restored under the basement
of a XVII century building, recently restored… Continue to the Holocaust
Memorial dedicated by the Jews of Barcelona…Early evening lecture by Professor
Stephen Berk…Overnight in Barcelona.
Day 5, Sunday, March 18,
2012: Breakfast and lecture with Professor Berk… Today we fly to
Granada, formerly "Granada of the Jews." Upon arrival we begin our tour, which
includes the Alhambra Palace, Generalife Gardens and Old Jewish Quarter…
Overnight in Granada.
Day 6, Monday, March 19, 2012:
Breakfast… We depart for Seville, the romantic capital of Andalucia. We visit
the Cathedral Palace and Barrio de Santa Cruz, the former Jewish Quarter. Time
permitting; we will also stop for a tour of the Royal Alcazar Palace of Seville.
We enjoy dinner together and an exciting flamenco performance. Overnight in
Seville.
Day 7, Tuesday, March 20, 2012: Breakfast… We
drive to Cordoba, home of the great Rambam, Moses Maimonides… We see the
synagogue with its bronze statue of Maimonides and the cathedral, once a mosque…
We have time for lunch and explore the shops of Calle de Los Judios before
returning to Seville. Overnight in Seville.
Day 8, Wednesday,
March 21, 2012: Breakfast… We depart for Madrid on the high speed AVE
train. Upon arrival we enjoy a city tour of Madrid, including the Royal Palace,
Retiro Park, Plaza Major, Centre de Arte' Reina Sophia to see the painting
"Guernica." Overnight in Madrid.
Day 9, Thursday, March 22,
2012: Breakfast… We enjoy a full day tour of Toledo, once the Royal
Capital of Spain and center of Jewish learning and literature… We visit the
Grand Toledo Cathedral, Santa Maria La Blanca (formerly a synagogue), and the
Transito Synagogue. We see the El Greco collection at Santo Thome Chapel and
return to Madrid… Overnight in Madrid.
Day 10, Friday, March 23,
2012: Breakfast…We visit the Museo del Prado together to view the
amazing masterpieces, and tour the Paseo del Prado between Estacion de Atocha
and Plaza Colon, including a view of the fountains at Fuente de Neptuno and the
Plaza de la Cibeles… This afternoon we have the option to remain at the Prado
(on own) for the opportunity to visit the Thyssen Art Gallery, have tea at the
Ritz in the outdoor gardens, or just take a stroll on the streets of Madrid.
Tonight we enjoy Shabbat dinner together at our hotel. Overnight in
Madrid.
Day 11, Saturday, March 24, 2012:
Breakfast…Shabbat at leisure OR Optional tour to the famous Escorial Monastery…
Return to Madrid… Today we enjoy a farewell dinner together… Overnight in
Madrid.
Day 12, Sunday, March 25, 2012: Breakfast… This
afternoon we transfer to the airport for our return flight back to New
York.
